Huernia is a genus in the Asclepiadaceae family. There are approximately 60 species in the genus. The majority of Huernias are short and clump-forming. The toothed stems are glabrous and 4 - 5 angled (rarely more). The star-shaped flowers resemble and smell like carrion to attract pollinators. Flowers are companulate or have a short tube, there is a prominent annulus in some species. Twin-horned seed pods occur after successful pollination. The Huernia genus was established by Robert Brown in 1809 in honour of Justus Heurnius. Justus Heurnias was a Dutch missionary and was responsible for introducing Orbea variegata into Europe in the 17th century. The transposition of the 'u' and 'e' was considered to be deliberate by Brown and therefore it must be retained.
