Dioscorea belongs to the Dioscoreaceae family, the genus is also known as Testudinaria.  There five decidious species in this genus, the plants are slow-growing and can develop a large woody caudex with age.  Long climbing stems develop rapidly during the plants growth season, stems have green leaves.

Tiny yellow flowers appear on the upper stems of mature Plants.

Plants are distributed in southern Africa and Mexico.
